One thing I think we've all noticed about RFC (hi! :mrgreen: ) is that he has fairly -- I don't want to say "predictable", but it kind of is -- taste in character names. By which I mean, there are certain names that you can be dead certain will never show up in a Weber novel, and certain names which you can be quite certain will. (For instance, I don't think the fact that the Honorverse includes Klaus Hauptman and Michael Oversteegen, and one of his sections of 1633 includes a character named Klaus Oversteegen, is a coincidence.)

So, which given names from this series are your favorite, and why?

And now I shall sit back and watch you talk for a bit without giving my opinion right off the bat. :mrgreen:

Gloria Michelle Samantha Evelyn Henke. But I can just see her face if you call her Gloria.

And, well, I like the way Honor Harrington alliteratively rolls off my tongue. Honor likes the way her name sounds on my lips too.

Paulo d'Arezzo.

He's the role I'd want to play in the series... if I had prolong and looked like a 22 year old or so. Though I'd be more likely to play MacGuiness if it ever came to that, however.

Name wise, my choice might have something to do with my real world moniker, however.

I must really like Nimitz, because my dog's name is Nena, and I keep calling her Nimitz.

She just gives me this look of a thousand words condensed down to "you can call me anything you like, he who buys me T-bones."

I admit it - this series has shot 'Eloise' straight to the top of my "future baby names" list.

When I hear that name now, I think of strength, grace, devotion, courage, faith, intelligence, drive... there's just something so unspeakably lovely about it, and it hasn't got a thing to do with Eloise Pritchart's looks.

It's got everything to do with her heart.

The other name this series has made me incredibly fond of is Amandine, as in Amandine Corvisart - a much lovelier version of the already lovely Amanda, in my opinion. (My attachment to the name Amanda, on the other hand, goes way back - to the '96 Olympics and a gymnast named Amanda Borden.) I've also been a fan of 'Abigail' going way back, though Abigail Hearns has certainly not hurt the name's case with me any. :mrgreen: Ditto Esther, which I've loved since I first read the Biblical story of the Persian queen as a child and is still in my top five. I much prefer it to 'Estelle', which would otherwise very much be on my list - despite Estelle Matsuko, it's still not my favorite, though it might make a lovely middle name. 'Elizabeth' is also a longtime favorite, going way back before I ever encountered the Honorverse - not least because it's my mother's name, but one Admiral Gold Peak has boosted my love for 'Michelle' quite a bit.

On the male side, 'Augustus' has suddenly become much more popular with me, for very obvious reasons, as have 'Allen', 'Thomas', 'Wesley', and 'Michael'.

..."Eloise Amandine". It has a nice ring, don't you think?

While Eloise is a nice name, from the French meaning "famous in war", Amandine is not related to Amanda. Amanda is Latin for "must be loved" while amandine means "garnished with sliced almonds." Not the best name I could think of.

I've always loved the name Shannon. Incidentally, I've never met an unattractive or at least sexy Shannon.

And the song, although written about the passing of Beach Boy Carl Wilson's Irish Setter of the same name, might have something to do with it. Easy to substitute a woman when listening to such a nice song.

I also like names, accompanied with titles ...

Lady Dame Honor Stephanie Alexander-Harrington, PMV, SG, GCR, MC*, SC, OG, DSO*, CGM**, Steadholder Harrington, Duchess Harrington, Countess White Haven, sheesh!

I also like to note the name of the town or city, country or area someone is from or born to see if it suits them.

Honor and Craggy Hollow, Sphinx.

I also like nicknames that someone may be stamped with as a result of their name. Not much you can do with Honor, but Honor.

Eloise becomes Elly, Elle, or, gasp, Weezy.
Elizabeth becomes Liz or Lizzy.
Estelle becomes Stell or Essie.
Victor becomes Vic.
Alison becomes Ally.

Same with ship names. Although the practice may rile the Captain.

I also like Iris, as in Babcock. It's interesting that the first name has to gel with the last.

Rabenstrange is, well, strange and conjures up all sorts of imagery.

I also like Abigail, which would always, most likely, default to Abby and for some reason reminds me of Gabrielle, which would default to Gabby.

I also like names with numbers...

Benjamin IX.

I also adore Rachel, as in Mayhew. The 'R' is such an aggressive consonant that becomes subdued with the rest of the name. A good cop bad cop teaming.

The television show Friends played on it a lot. "Rrrachel!"

Or when Rachel would angrily say, "Come on Rross!"
