Am presently re-reading the series, and have reached Field of Dishonor, and the Young court martial deliberation.
“…I will not vote to convict Lord Young of the capital charges against him, Sir…Whether he was legally within his rights to refuse Lady Harrington’s orders, or whether he was bound by his understanding of the situation to accept them is immaterial to that decision.
At the same time, I will not allow a man like Lord Young to escape punishment…Whether the legal right or wrong of his actions, they were inexcusable….”

In that one brief statement she’s shown herself not only to be totally untrustworthy; in that she’s broken her oath to be impartial and apolitical, but also a bad officer, in that she showed no consideration at all of the servicemen killed when Young turned tail.
I recall from my first read that DW rehabilitates her, in a later conversation with Honor, also with her innovative skill.

David Weber doesn't agree with you.

Well, since he confirmed my analysis of Augustus and Estelle's current relationship as pretty much bang-on, I'm inclined to say 'quite a lot', but maybe that's my own vanity talking.

RFC may not be an all knowing deity but he's got Apollo in his hip pocket.

I wonder if Animal House has survived into the 40th century?

You have an excellent grasp of Sonja Hemphill's character.

And I can totally picture her having to squash the impulse to say, "Are we there yet?" every two hours. And she and Shannon becoming instant best friends. And Sonja basically clapping in glee when she sees the playground that is Bolthole. And she and Shannon being basically inseparable the entire time they're there, and muttering together about things that fly right over everybody else's head. And unintentional sleepovers because they're on Shannon's couch going over something or other and they literally fall asleep over their pads. And they wake up with Sonja's head on Shannon's shoulder and look at each other and blush like mad and then hurry to go back to work because...

...I think I'm getting a little carried away here. 8-)

...little carried Away? Getting carried away is when the Galactic-duo have their first real quarrel. Five will probably be like "hide and lock the Tactical teams up for our own safety! Somebody, quick! Toss a technical brief between the two and run!
The make up moment should really be productive though. :P

<sarcasm> How dare she focus on the big picture, AKA the greater good of her nation, the military, and its personnel as a whole rather than obsess with getting full vengeance for the already dead. </sarcasm>

Hey, my impressions of Hemphill came from On Basilisk Station, where she came across as a opinionated egomaniac who had to have her own way, come what may and no matter who got hurt.
In Field of Dishonor her negative character traits are only intensified by her own words and actions.
As has been noted DW does seem to have re-habilitated her; that magnificent bio bears proof of that, so I’ll look forward to seeing the new improved model in the rest of the series.
First impressions are hard to break! ;)

The thing is a lot of what she gets blamed for in OBS wasn't her fault.
