Did you see my one-liner extolling the virtues of one Augustus Khumalo, rose? I figured that you would be all over that :D

By my extensive research the USN and this includes the USMC never gets above grade 3 about 90% of the time and only gets to grade 2 the rest of it. Warning! Warning! never ever drink mess-deck coffee between 0400 and 0500, This stuff is so strong it will melt the spoon (and maybe the cup) and etch glass.

For the USAF it spends most of its time hopping from grade 2 and 3 with occasional jumps to grade 1.

The USA is with out a doubt is all over the place when it comes to coffee. MRE coffee absolutely never gets above grade 5 unless you also mix in your MRE cocoa mix and then you get MocaJoe.

As for my self I developed an allergy to coffee during my military service and have not partaken a cup of coffee in almost 25 years

Heh... that cocoa mix gets a lot of credit for making things better. When I was in England and we had our wargames, we would get issued MREs (obviously), but we also would be given vanilla Snack Pack pudding. About half the people I worked with would mix in roughly 1/3-1/2 of their cocoa mix into the pudding, making it chocolate pudding.

Speaking of MREs, how many of you were ever able to separate the two chocolate-covered cookies - *without* using a screwdriver or a knife? I managed it *once*, and only because it was summer, and my MRE had been sitting out in the sun for an hour or so.

WELL I HAVE NOW.

*curls up in little ball of cheerful, happy, lovestruck fangirl*

*incoherent squealing*

*muffled cries of 'BABY' and 'DARLING' and 'MINE' and 'TOTALLY ESTELLE'S' echo in the distance*

Well, of course not. This is the stuff the snipes come up out of their hole to get when it is time to de-grease the engine room. Poured on the deck or wiped on a surface with an asbestos rag, it will pick up enough dirt and grease to avoid dissolving the mop and regular rags. Leaves everything shiny clean. they just have to make sure they spread it around so it doesn't eat a hole in the deck or the pipes.

:( Shamefully I've done this. While drinking from the same pot. Also used bug juice and hot sauce.

Changer of Worlds
Yet Branch Leaper always felt a deep, almost reverent awe whenever he ascended this tree and realized that his claws touched the same bark, the same wood, as those of the legendary Sings Truly and all of her successors.

I wish I could hear her, 'cause it is obvious that that gal could sang.

What legendary female singer on Earth had a voice that still resonates generations after?

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

Shirley Temple

Billie Holiday

Janis Joplin

I didn't like her much, but I also have to add Whitney Houston.

Patti LaBelle (though she's still alive)

Donna Summer

Judy Garland

Oddly enough, when it was my turn to run the squadron snack bar, my coffee got quite a bit of praise. Don't know what I was doing different - I just followed the instructions on the can and kept the coffee maker and pots clean.

You may be surprised to find out how many people do not EITHER follow instructions OR keep the pots clean.

And, since we're discussing this on a Science Fiction related web site, I have a suggestion...

Check out the "Share" series of books by Nathan Lowell.
FFI, see URL: http://solarclipper.com/get-the-books/

As I recall, fairly early on in the first book, "Quarter Share", the main character it told to make coffee, and not given any further direction. He proceeds to impress everyone with his coffee, in part because he CLEANED EVERY SINGLE PART of the coffee urn that was exposed to the coffee.

Who knew that reading about making coffee could be so interesting? I sure didn't.

I LOVE THE RMN BUT BY GOD IN THIS CASE EVERY SINGLE OFFICER WHO UNDERESTIMATED THIS MAN IS A GODDAMN MORON

*cough*

That is to say, everyone who ever underestimated Augustus Khumalo should feel very very bad about it for a very long time.
