OK, after a month of HFQ's release, what is your strongest impression of the book and series? Since we are at 30/31 days, the "Spoiler" lamp is OFF!
 Warning: Watch for gremlins as it is 2015's 3rd and last Friday 13th!  NOTE: I am not after detailed analysis - post that on 'n7axw' post of "Direction of story". What I am curious about is more impressionistic, a quick sentence or so of your feeling of enjoyment and / or anticipation for the fun of this story arc. After 7 books & six years, we have enough of a 'first impression' I think!  -----

Safehold started off as a story, but by now it's turned into a history of the entire world. A directon I've never seen before and one that does slow the plotline down, but I continue to enjoy it nevertheless, especially given that the pace has sped up somewhat in HFQ. We're in this arc's endgame now, so I'm curious what will happen next.

Of all of the books I liked HFQ the best. To be honest though I'm bored with the series, I've stopped caring what happens. The only thing that got me to buy this book was the snippets and the fact that Oliver Wyman was narrating.

After a re-read I like the book much more. This book is setting up a blockbuster finish to the war

Unlike every other book in the series which was read cover to cover in less than 24hrs, it took me a full week to wade through it all. I did better and got more enjoyment out of the first re-read, but I would rank this book only slightly above "Out of the Dark" among DW's efforts. Part of the problem was that the bulk of what I wanted to find all occurred in the early parts that were snippeted and well vetted before publication. The remainder, even though condensed, just went on forever with little new information. The missing maps and the endless dramatis personae which, unfortunately, didn't limit itself to HFQ people were no help either. I am glad it was published and look forward to some concluding works, but it was not up to the DW norms.

The problem with Out Of The Dark is that it seems that Weber decided one day that he would end the book,and then he did one hour later with that wackey ending, does not make sense. The worst book he's written, I think HFQ is much better.

Great book from my standpoint. Some unexpected plot twists and new character development. I enjoyed both the info dumps and the battle scenes. Am working on 4th re-read... Looking forward now to next in series.

Enjoyed the book immensely! The feel of the story is very much like history in the making. I saw the cusp/inflection points shaping up and the pressures building in the geopolitics. The characters are riding the geopolitics, shaping them and/or being swept away by them. The experience of the characters as usual describe how the difficult plot items unfold. The concentration camps come to mind. The events on those camps sparked immense physical courage, immense moral courage and intense internal reflection by good guys and bad guys.
All told, there is a lot of pressure plot building towards a climax that can go one of several ways. That is a definition of a good book to my way of thinking. |

Yes the book is waaay better than out of the dark the only book of DW which I have hated the ending.
I think we have to take the snippets as a positive not a negative after all if you don't want to read them don't. So reading the book as a whole I have found it not his best but not the worst in the series. A solid "****" star for me. Can't wait till his next installment. Can see all sorts of threads coming together rebellions/revolts in Chisholm and Zion. Major land battles, the king harralds in action more seijin action etc etc. |

I am pretty sure Out of the Dark was written to pay off a sudden bill. It is the worst book David has ever written. Sorry RFC...I love all your other work. |
