When referring to ships in chapter titles, each ship has a name followed by a number. What is the meaning of the number

Probably, a US 44 gun ship actually carried 54 guns and a British 50 gun carried 58 guns.

Historically, it did not include carronades, but did include bow/stern chasers.

From Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-rate#Rating:
"From the invention of the slide-mounted carronade in the later 1770s, first rates (like other warships), could mount a number of these weapons on their quarterdecks and forecastles to augment their short-range firepower, but they were not included in the ship's rating until 1817 except where they replaced carriage-mounted guns."

(Presumably they are referring to the British classification system. What other nations classed carronades is unknown.)


I can't remember whether MWW/RFC is counting carronades (...and I'm too lazy to look it up. :lol: )
