Dear Mr. MWW,

I was just rereading OAR and when Nimue awakened and realized that her high speed port wasn't functional, she thought that she could fix the programming, but was concerned that if anything went awry while doing so she wouldn't be able to correct it if she wasn't operable.

Why couldn't the new (LAMA)Nimue do it for him now? Then both of them would be at full speed to do data capture and analysis!

Just wondering.....

Because OWL can't guarantee that the PICA will retain Merlins imprint after said fix.

It's also a plot device since otherwise Merlin would have been too powerful, ie. a lot less deus ex machina moments and more "doing things the hard way".

The story has moved ahead from where Merlin is a necessary character and since the introduction of the second pica (with Nimue) I'm actually expecting Merlin to be destroyed/killed in the not too distant future, probably during the "return of the Archangels".

Might be a possibility, but it would still require several weeks of downtime for Merlin while they made a slow differential backup of how he has changed since the 'base' Nimue recording in case of 'Oopsie's. I think there might be a chance of actual hardware damage as well. And guess which bits OWL is out of elements to make new parts for? ;)
