Well, that was a rather quick introduction to the Inner Circle. Only a few books ago, that sort of thing was debated about for half a book or more. This bodes well for the pacing of HFQ. :)

Well now, there's an executive decision about how to deal with Aivah's surprise!

I find it a bit difficult to take though, after all the soul-searching, struggling and waiting we have had about inducting other people to the inner circle. Aivah I can see, but her maid, whom no one in the Circle knows personally or even knows much about?!? Even though she does turn out to be her No 2? The Brothers at St Zherneau's will be having fits. The fact that it happened because Aivah insisted is even worse; it strongly suggests that she is not willing to accept the collective discipline the circle has exercised before this.

Nimue's cave seems to be turning into a second hand vehicle dealership. We had heard about 2 skimmers and an assault shuttle early on, while an airvan crept into things somewhere along the way. Now though we have multiple assault shuttles, multiple APCs, of a flyable nature, and at least 3, quite possibly more, airvans!

I'm not at all clear why Merlin is now considering the possibility of transporting 'job lots' of people by air so seriously that OWL is producing not just one but two airbuses.

As to the second pilot, I can't think anyone else, who can be brought along, is qualified to actually pilot except Nimue. This is very unlikely to be happening the same night Aivah surprised Merlin. He had to go and have the discussion we have seen with the Inner Circle, get both skimmers to Siddar City, and the one way trip to the cave is taking 3.5 hours. There is just no way to fit all that plus doing something useful at the cave and getting back into a single night. Merlin, Aivah and Sandaria can't all just disappear for a day without time to prepare a cover story. So we must be at least a day later which could give Nimue time to pop over.

Nit, Sandaria was not a novitiate at the same time as Nynian; they were in the novitiate together so were both novices.

Hi Randomizer,

Just a thought...

It could be that Nynian and Sandaria are not being trusted with everything.

Merlin was more or less caught red handed so not sharing his story inc. showing her the cave would have been pointless. That's not to say she is on the inside with the brethren or the inner circle. That story is not neccesarily Merlin's alone to share.

I confess I am surprised by the inclusion of Sandaria. But it is not unprecedented. Nahrman was approved by the brethren. But as I recall, the decision to include Olyvia was made by Cayleb and Sharleyan.

What will be interesting in if they get to meet Nahrman or if they will only encounter Owl.

My guess would be that Cayleb has been itching to fly. I wouldn't put it past him to have insisted on some sort of simulator, and that he has been training on it.
AND Merlin wouldn't put Cayleb in a skimmer with someone he (Merlin) didn't completely trust.
I guess Nimue.

Idea: This snippet goes into some detail to explain that Eidetic memory is far more common (but still rare) on Safehold than it is on today's Earth.

This suggests to me that one of the SSK's membership requirements is that a prospective memory must have eidetic memory. Girls (and possibly boys) are recruited if they have eidetic memory. And they do this as security measure in order to not have any inconvenient code books lying around for the Inquisition to discover.

Nynian is an old hand at this sort of thing - she knows need-to-know very well, and isn't going to bat an eye about not being told things she doesn't need to know. Mind you, what she needs to know - and particularly all it implies - isn't small change, but that may not include anything about St. Zherneau's, for instance. And given what she already figured out and her skills and network, not extending a certain trust could be a lot more dangerous than doing so.

Here, it's dealing with her fast transportation needs, which is coming out of the Cave vehicle park. So a visit to appreciate them is in order. It needn't be a part of the Grand Tour of every secret of the Inner Circle, even if she's going straight to some of the biggest and deepest ones.

And while we're well aware of the need for the EoC's Inner Circle to keep their secrets, she's already spilled more of the SSK's than I suspect they've ever been in the habit of sharing with anyone they couldn't quietly strangle than St. Zherneau's have been. It's not like Merlin and all are taking all the risks, or even the first ones doing it in this case.

Let's extend your speculation. The CoGA recognizes the value of people with eidetic memory. They certainly would recruit such gifted people. That means there is a much greater likelyhood of highly placed moles reporting to the SSK as the CoGA including the Inquisition recruit those graduates of the Convent.

Granted the young ladies won't hold high office but they would almost have to be assistants to the highest of office holders. Especially office holders that themselves don't have eidetic memory.

Why the air busses.
No doubt following the dictates of the famous Irish philosopher, Justin Casey.

The SSK is recruiting men, at least as operatives. At this point we have no evidence of a separate male order, so we don't really know the procedure for traing and support. I wonder about that.

The other thing is we have no textev of the inquisition recruiting women. So how the process of the SSK penetrating the inquisition is something we don't know yet. Yet we know that Nynian has her sourses in the inquisition.

It's going to be interesting to see how it plays out.

Yaaaay, a new snippet, all the way from Praha, TYVM RFC. I have long been wanting more development of the Nynian character & it seems she is proving to be even more interesting than I had suspected or even hoped for.
