The Treaty of Silk Town created Silkiah as a demilitarized independent Grand Duchy guaranteed by the CoGA. This happened some 50 years ago. Prior to the Treaty Siddermark had spent 150 years or so kicking the snott out of Desnair. One might suggest that much of the fighting occurred in Silkiah. That fact and the fierce dislike Silkiahns had of Desnairi might further suggest that in these prior 150 years from the treaty Silkiahns had become largely Siddermarkian. That the CoGA created an independent nation argues Silkiah WAS part of Siddermark or becomming so prior to the Treaty.

The unpleasant fact that after the Treaty of Silk Town the duchy had to pay tribute to Desnair might also have something to do with that dislike.

Don

If Desnair was liked, that tribute would be looked at as taxes. So it is likely that the tribute added to dislike that already existed.

Grand duke Thirsk and Zhanyt

Hes way too old really I know BUT I could see the dust clearing and him being the new leader of Dohlar and marrying him into the Arhnak family would be a real boon politically.

By calling him grand duke it is my guess of his new title once the dust clears but I guess he could be prince or king...

When Charis wins the war, Zhanayt will be the most desired and pursued marriage partner on all of safehold. I do believe The Empire of Charis will have little need for a Dynastic Marriage but RFC has touched on the matter and will close the circle.

I've lost track of 'the kids', but is Zhan living in Emerald? Isn't he next in line for the throne after Alannah? I suppose if Zhanayt is actually 17 she may be an adult which could put her in the hot seat anyway. (Can anyone remember where RFC's post that talks about the age of majority is?)

And do many of your neighbours in Colorado like taxes?

I found the book/part where the discussion about Zhanayt's possible future husband takes place. (BSRA pg460-465). Cayleb, Sharleyan and Merlin are discussing her future.

As the situation in Corisande has changed so drastically since this 892 the most prominent possibility wich comes to my mind is a Dohlaran. Maybe Thrisk like Alistar mentioned but someone else might also be possible.

No. But neither do we hats the levels of government that demand those taxes purely because they demand it.

The CoGA created Silkiah as a "buffer state" to separate and protect Desnair from Siddarmark's "overweening ambition". The Border States serve a similar purpose - All are effectively intended to serve as a tripwire for the Church and it's immediate allies against the threat of Siddarmark.

I imagine though that when the dust settles, we're likely to see the emergence of new states on Safehold. Something the size of Desnair or Harchong may well disintegrate into several successor states and Charis will have to choose which of them is worth allying with (and marrying Zhanayt to). Or they could choose anyone of Thirsk's grandsons if they are old enough.

Forgive me if I am wrong but isn't Thrisk already married? I seem to remember a passage about him having to get his family to safety with all the inquisitors about and him not doing such a splendid job stopping Charis at sea
