Going through the Dahak series and hearing a lot of the same church stuff and seeing the same mix of different generations of weapons in Heirs that you see in Safehold.

Just wondering if writing it gave RFC ideas on an expanded storyline that led to Nimue waking up in that cave.

As I remember reading somewhere, Safehold was always one of the series he wanted to write. While he was writing the Dahak books it didn't look like Safehold would ever by picked up by a publisher so he folded some of the ideas in where he could to get at least some use out of them. Then, of course, someone agreed to publish Safehold.

The story I heard was sometime c. 1990, he wrote up backgrounds for several possible multi-book series for Jim Baen. Baen chose Honor Harrington; Safehold was one of the other possibilities (perhaps Arcana-Sharona was one as well).
